Grim & Gram
Grim and Gram are one of the minor characters in Freak the Mighty. The author, Rodman Philbrick, describes Grim and Gram as Max’s grandparents who have taken care of him since he was about five years old . In addition, Grim and Gram are protective and thoughtful. In the novel, the author reveals that Grim and Gram are protective when they have Max sleep upstairs instead of in the down under. “Gram makes me sleep upstairs that night and she keeps checking on me about every hour to see if I’m there” (Philbrick #). This shows that Grim and Gram are caring enough to move Maxwell to a safer place to check on him. Furthermore, the author shows that Grim and Gram are thoughtful when they let Maxwell go by himself to the millpond with Freak for fireworks, instead of of them going with him. “Anyhow, this is the first year I get to go to the fireworks without Grim and Gram.” (Philbrick #29). This is because Gram and Grim are thoughtful to have Max go with Freak since they think that it would be a good idea. Based on the character’s behavior and dialogue in this novel, you can clearly see that Grim and Gram are caring and thoughtful.
