Kevin
Kevin is one of the main characters in Freak the Mighty. The author, Rodman Philbrick, describes Kevin as a scrawny and smart boy who has a growth syndrome and his heart grows bigger than his body is. In addition, Kevin is smart and brave. In the novel, the author reveals that Kevin is smart when he gets Max away from being hurt at the millpond with Tony D. “Left!” Freak says, and he kicks me with his little foot, like he’s digging into a horse and it clicks in my head” (Philbrick #35). This shows that Freak is smart enough to come up with a plan to have Max know what to do instead of him just mixing up his rights and lefts. Furthermore, the author shows that Kevin is brave when he tries to save Max and he shoots his dad with a squirt gun that has curry powder, soap, and vinegar. “He’s got a squirt gun…” “Killer Kane says, “You’re lying, kid, you can’t fool me.” That’s when Freak squeezes the trigger and sprays him right in the eyes” (Philbrick #132). This is because Kevin is brave enough to save Max even though it could have cost him his life, but he didn’t care he just wanted to have his best friend Max. Based on the character’s behavior and dialogue in this novel, you can clearly see that Kevin is smart and brave.
