Maxwell has been through a lot his whole life. His Mom is dead and his Dad has been placed in jail for supposively killing Max's mother. Max lives with Grim and Gram and didn't have any friends until Freak had come along.
Maxwell Kane Maxwell Kane is one of the main characters in Freak the Mighty. The author, Rodman Philbrick, describes Maxwell as a butt head and hadn't had a brain until Freak had come along . In addition, Maxwell is brave and supportive. In the novel, the author reveals that Maxwell is brave when he stops his Dad from choking Loretta Lee. “I can’t get him loose of her, so all I can do is keep screaming, “I know you killed her! I saw you do it! You killed her and I’ll never forget, not ever!” Finally he kind of jerks his head and I can feel him looking at me and then his hands open.” (Philbrick #129). This shows that Max is brave by getting his Dad’s attention away from Loretta by screaming so later he can be choked by his own father. Furthermore, the author shows that Maxwell is supportive when he goes to see Freak in the hospital when he had his seizure on his birthday the other night. “They won’t let me visit him the first day, and Gram says I’ll just have to be patient and let the doctors do their business, but I can’t stand just sitting around so I decide to walk over to the hospital, which Grim says is miles and miles, but suit myself.” (Philbrick #147). This is because Max cares about Freak and can’t stand the fact that they are not going on an adventure, going on a quest, slaying dragons, or finding fair maidens to rescue. Based on the character’s behavior and dialogue in this novel, you can clearly see that Maxwell is brave and supportive. By: Ryan Paolinelli
